The UK is one of my favourite destinations to travel to, and the country of lochs and castles does not disappoint! With vast coastal lines and green highlands, the country offers some spectacular scenery. The best way to enjoy Scotland is by car, which gives you the freedom to roam around as you please. This is also the perfect opportunity to tailor your own holiday and make the most out of your visit!

Hike the Devils Pulpit

The Devil’s Pulpit is a beautiful moss-covered gorge with an almost ruby-coloured river flowing through. You might recognize it from the Outlander series and the Detective Pikachu movie from 2019. The real name of the gorge is Finnich Glen, the name Devil’s Pulpit comes from a rock formation in the gorge that looks similar to a church pulpit, although the red water caused by the red sandstone seemed more satanic to the early visitors.

Visit a Whisky Distillery

Can you visit Scotland without trying some Scottish whisky? No, so why not make the most of the experience by visiting an authentic Scottish whisky distillery? On the neighbour island to the Isle of Skye, you’ll find the small and charming Isle of Raasay, complete with its own whisky distillery. PS, you can even spend the night here.

Explore a castle

All over Scotland, you will find castle remains. Some are restored and made into museums which require a ticket upon entering and some just remain free to enter and explore at your leisure. The history of Scotland is so interesting and rich and I would highly recommend a stop by some of the most iconic and famous castles in Scotland such as Eilean Donan Castle but also to stop by if you find any interesting ruins on your journey.

Go searching for the Loch Ness Monster

Loch Ness is probably one of the most famous sites in Scotland. This picturesque location has all of the things Scotland is famous for, a large loch, an abandoned castle and its very own lake monster. Even though this is an iconic location it also comes with a crowd so I would recommend visiting during the low season.

Visit Isle of Skye

Connected to the mainland only by a bridge Isle of Skye is known for its dramatic scenery. Rugged landscapes, picturesque fishing villages and yes you guessed it, medieval castles! The landscape on the island is truly unique and looks like something out of a Jurrasic Park movie. Prepare to spend at least a whole day exploring this amazing island.

Go searching for Hogwarts

Don’t forget, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is located somewhere in Scotland. Even though muggles will only see an old ruin if they stumble upon the castle you can find many hints of the wizarding world’s existence throughout the country! We certainly enjoyed watching the Hogwarts express pass by on the Glenfinnan Viaduct, although there was no sign of the flying Ford Anglia.
