We woke bright and early to join our tour of Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius with City Wonders. Stepping onto the cobblestone streets that had not yet started their bustling life I could feel the excitement for the day ahead growing as we got closer to our meeting point and managed to blink the sleep out of our eyes.
Visiting Rome and Pompeii has always been a dream destination for me. The cities are so full of ancient history – especially the lost city of Pompeii which existed nearly 2000 years ago and was not discovered before the late 16th century!

Stepping onto the streets of Pompeii that were once buried in ashes from the volcano Mt. Vesuvius felt like going back in time. Our guide led us through the ruins and told us all about life back in 79AD. The thing that struck me the most about Pompeii was how advanced the population were at such an early age. While they were running around in the mud and acting like cavemen back in Norway life in Pompeii was quite different. They had their own big spas and theatres and seemed to live a quite rich life.
After a lunch break, we headed for the real challenge of this trip – climbing the volcano that once buried Pompeii – Mt. Vesuvius. You can drive almost all the way to the top, but you’ll have to walk the last part, it will take about 30 minutes to climb to the very top where you’ll have a beautiful view of Naples and you can look into the crater from the last eruption. The crater left after the eruption that buried Pompeii is actually a valley that you drive along on the way to the top. Mt. Vesuvius is rated as the most dangerous volcano in the world because it is still active and there are so many people (around 3 million) living in the red and orange zone.
