The African continent offers a diverse climate and landscape that comes to life through incredible and unique wildlife. With the biggest wildlife in the world, you can experience the joy of driving alongside a pack of antelopes, hear the mighty roar of a lion and feel the shivers from a pack of elephants tracking by.

Similar to a thousand others – experiencing an African Safari has been on my bucket list for ages! There are more than 40 national parks in Africa, so how choose? Here are my favourites.

Krüger National Park

There is no doubt that a safari in Africa has been one of my biggest adventures yet. And where better to start than with Krüger National Park? This is an enormous national park located in South Africa. The size of the park can be comparable to a small country! This meant that it was impossible to cover the whole park in just over a few days, but equipped with a passionate guide we got to experience some pretty amazing and once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounters

Krüger National Park is one of the most popular safari parks with a property of nearly 20 000 square kilometres of wilderness. Here you can watch the “Big 5” (lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards and rhinos) roam freely in their natural habitat.

Chobe National Park

Chobe National Park, located in Botswana is another popular safari destination, especially famous for its sunset cruise down the Chobe River. The park has one of the largest concentrations of game in all of Africa.

The sunset river cruise was a highlight of the tour of Chobe. The cruise allowed us to watch the elephants and hippos up close in such a beautiful setting. Even the cold African winter evening breeze couldn’t keep my hands off the camera with that view!

My Trip

When I went to Africa I chose to join a 12-day tour with a travel company. Firstly, this tour allowed me to visit 3 countries in 12 days – South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe, with something exciting to see every day! Travelling with a company also allowed me to just sit back and relax after a long flight while someone else did all the planning and not to mention driving!

Usually, I would prefer to do things in my own time, and experience things on my own. But for this trip, I chose to join a travel company to make sure I made the most of the trip in the 12 short days I had. It was a major success! For the safari trips, it meant that we at all times had an experienced guide with us who could answer all of my questions and tell me all about this unique wildlife. He also dished up some amazing local food for lunch! However, after getting to know the country I would do my next trip independently.
