“The Smoke that Thunders” (The Falls)

Victoria Falls is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It is located on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia and is one of the biggest attractions in Africa. With a length of over a kilometre and a height of over 100 meters, Victoria Falls is a magnificent view. The waterfall is referred to as the smoke that thunders. The noise can be heard from a distance of 40 kilometres and the spray and mist may reach a height of 400 meters and can be seen from a distance of 50 kilometres. This surely puts the falls on top of the Victoria Falls bucket list.

Remember to bring a raincoat – we could occasionally feel the mist from the falls even at our lodge 5km away! And let’s just say our stroll along the falls became a WET experience! When we approached the wildest parts of the falls it seemed as if it was raining cats and dogs, and it was only spraying from the falls!

Lion Encounter

Even though the falls are the main attraction, the high number of tourists has attracted several tourism-based businesses that offer a range of activities. One of these is Lion Encounter, an active conservation program that works to ensure a secure future for African lions. The company offers tourists a chance to walk with magnificent animals. It is also possible to sign up for volunteer work!

The opportunity of getting up close and personal with these amazing creatures was a breathtaking experience. Even though they are big predators they did only seem like big cats! But keep in mind that the gorgeous brothers I got to meet were used to being around people, unlike their offspring who will not receive any human contact and be released into the wild.

Zip Line

Wild Horizons offers the longest Zip Line in the world! Travelling at a speed of 106km/h 120 meters above the Zambezi river is sure to give you a rush of adrenaline. Being a bit of a wimp it is safe to say I did not think I could go through with it, but after getting my feet firmly planted back on the safe ground I felt pretty amazing.

Microlight Flight over the Falls

A microlight flight offers an unobstructed view of the falls and the opportunity to truly take in the magic from the smoke that thunders. The activity is a bit pricy but if you can afford it, it should definitely be on your to-do list in Victoria Falls.

Elephant Back Safari

Shearwater offers an opportunity to go on a back safari on one of their 12 elephants located in the Jafuta Game Reserve just outside of Victoria Falls. This is an amazing opportunity to get personal with one of the largest animals in the world. Feeling the afternoon sun burn out while watching the African wilderness stretch out from the back of an elephant is truly an experience that describes Africa.
