Iceland is one of my all-time favourite places to visit. The “out of this world” landscape not only makes for beautiful photographs but also for an experience that makes you feel like you’ve stepped onto a different planet. Even though we only had a weekend to experience the magic of Iceland we managed to experience most of what Iceland’s west coast had to offer, such as taking a dip in The Blue Lagoon, and discovering the national park of Snæfellsnes and the Golden Circle.

Similar to Norway, the weather in Iceland can be pretty unpredictable and might change rapidly just over the course of a weekend. So what do you pack for Iceland?

Details of my trip to Iceland

Month: October

Season: Early Winter

Weather: Early winter is one of the most beautiful times to visit Iceland. The colours on the landscape are breathtaking. Even though the winters are usually quite mild, nevertheless the weather might be quite unpredictable. We experienced both heavy rain and some pretty stormy weather on parts of our trip.

Packing List

  1. Knit Cap – A warm hat is essential in order to keep you warm on the top of your head as well as shield your ears for heavy winds.
  2. Wool Socks – Warm socks will not only keep your feet warm but also dry as they wick away moisture.
  3. Warm Scarf – A big chinky scarf can be used as a blanket in addition to keep you warm.
  4. Gloves
  5. Heavy Coat – Invest in a nice heavy coat to protect you from the cold.
  6. Down Vest – They roll up small and can be used to layer between a shirt and a jacket.
  7. Heavy Turtleneck – Scarf and sweater in one!
  1. Wool Sweater – Invest in a quality wool sweater that will keep you warm and comfortable.
  2. Flannel Shirt – Perfect for layering and also super comfortable. Even though you’ll probably find yourself wearing a jacket all day it’s nice to have something cute and comfortable in the car or when you’re inside having a meal.
  3. Long Sleeve for layering – Iceland is all about layering. In order to adjust to the temperature stepping in and out of a vehicle it is nice to be able to take on or off layers.
  4. Thermal Tops and Thermal Pants – These are super thin and you can even wear them under your skinny jeans. They are soft to the touch and super comfortable.
  5. Swimsuit – A swimsuit for the Blue Lagoon! The Blue Lagoon is such a bucket list experience on a trip to Iceland.
  6. Black Denim Pants – Super versatile! I’m such a fan of black denim pants.
  7. Fleece Leggings – These are life savers on those adventurous days when you’ll want to wear something comfortable and warm.
  8. Boots – A pair of shorter cute boots for when you want to explore Reykjavik.
  9. Heavy Waterproof Boots – A pair of heavy boots are perfect when you’re expecting a bit of rain or hiking the areas around Reykjavik.
