Djursland

We started our drive from Stavanger, Norway and got in by boat to the port of Hirtshals. From there we drove out to Djursland, a little peninsula located on the west coast of Denmark. It has beautiful nature, lovely beaches and lots of outdoor activities.

Highlights: Mols Bjerge National Park, Kalø Castle, Ebeltoft, Jagtslottet and Aalborg Old Town.

Mols Bjerge National Park

Shaped over millions of years by ice and water, Mols Bjerge National Park offers some amazing nature. From high peaks to deep glacial pits, you will find some amazing views across this region of Denmark.

Kalø Castle

Kalø Castle ruins is a 700-year-old fortress located on the peninsula Kalø. Walking up to this historic site is like taking a stroll through history, following Denmark’s oldest medieval paved road. The site is rich with history and situated in a beautiful landscape that looks like something out of Tolkien’s universe!

Ebeltoft

Ebeltoft is an old port town known for its old city centre with cobble-stoned streets and classic Danish timbered houses.

Jagtslottet

Originally created for Martin Johan Jenisch in the late 1800s, by the well-known architect Hack Kampmann.

Aarhus Old Town

A part of the old town of Aarhus has been conserved as a museum and is now one of the top attractions in Aarhus. The exhibition is a journey through time taking you from the 70s district all the way to modern times. As you’re strolling around you can see horses and carriages coming through the streets and browse shops from different time periods.

Funen

From Djursland we drove down to Funen and stayed in Odense for a couple of days. This is a great place to set up base before taking off on your daily adventures. Funen used to be the home of H.C Andersen and you can clearly see how the region has inspired his work.

Highlights: Odense, Egeskov Castle, Middelfart.

Egeskov Castle

Egeskov Castle is considered Europe’s best-preserved Renaissance water castle. The grounds are beautiful and house several exhibitions of cars and motorbikes from different time periods. However, note that entrance to the castle is only available during the summer season.

Odense

Odense is one of the largest cities in Denmark. The city is heavily influenced by the author H.C Andersen giving it the nickname the fairytale city. It’s the perfect place to keep as a base while exploring the rest of Fyn.

South Jutland

While exploring the south of Jutland we also crossed the border over to Germany for some shopping. However, there are plenty of beautiful sights in the south of Jutland.

Highlights: Christiansfeld, The Wadden Sea and Ribe.

If you are staying longer don’t miss out on: Hvide Sande, Blåvand, Møgeltønder, Sønderborg and Dybbøl Mølle.

Ribe

Ribe is claimed to be the oldest town in Denmark with a history dating back all the way to the 700s. It was even the capital of Denmark during the Viking Age! Walking through the cobblestone streets and looking at all the crooked traditional houses transports you back in time.

The Wadden Sea

As the largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud in the world the Wadden Sea has been made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It stretches from Denmark through Germany and into the Netherlands. This unique nature is not only beautiful but also home to numerous plant and animal species such as seals and porpoises.

North Jutland

Turning our nose back home we stopped by North Jutland. This is a beautiful region and much like Djursland it is filled with amazing nature and outdoor activities.

Highlights: Rebild Bakker National Park and Rold Skov.

If you are staying longer don’t miss out on: Blokhus, Tornby, Rubjerg Knude, Råbjerg Mile, Skagen and Sæby.

Rebild Bakker

This protected area is comprised of hilly heathlands, small towns and peaceful forests. It is the perfect spot for nature activities such as hiking and canoeing, You can also visit the limestone mines of Thingbæk and Rold forest.
