Deep fjords and cascading waterfalls are just some of the views you can expect from Geiranger. As arguably one of the most spectacular fjords in Norway it has made the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and attract visitors from all over the world.

The small village of Geiranger is located in Sunnmøre. Even though there are only a few hundred people settled in Geiranger, it is the third largest cruise ship port in Norway. Each summer 140 to 180 cruise ships make their way to Geiranger with hundreds of thousands of passengers.

The Fjord

The mountains surrounding the fjord of Geiranger are rich with waterfalls and among them, you will find ‘The seven sisters’ and ‘The Suitor’. Along the cliff sides, you may also be able to spot abandoned farms hanging by the edge of a mountainside. The only way to gaze upon these breathtaking sights will be by boat. Geiranger is under constant threat of landslides from the mountain Åkerneset. Should a larger piece collapse a tsunami could destroy the whole of downtown Geiranger. For this reason, an alarm has been installed to warn settlers of potential larger landslides.

Dalsnibba

Dalsnibba also called the Geiranger skywalk is situated at a height of 1500 meters. From this height, you will have an extraordinary view of the fjord and village below. At the mountain top, you will find a shop and a viewing area. With a clear drop of approximately 500 meters, this viewing area will give you the sensation of flying through the valley. If the weather is clear I would recommend stopping by on your way down to Geiranger.

Flydalsjuvet

Probably the most photographed spot in Geiranger, Flydalsjuvet offers a magical view of the valley below along with some great photo opportunities. The viewing area consists of two levels with ‘Fjordsetet’, opened by Queen Sonja, on the lower level. From the viewing platform, there is a breathtaking view of the Geiranger fjord and the village as well as the beautiful nature all around you. It is an excellent spot for a snack break on your way down to Geiranger!
