Svalbard is one of my all-time favourite destinations. Located only about 2200 km from the North Pole, makes the climate on Svalbard is rough and rugged. Similar to the mainland, the weather on Svalbard can be pretty unpredictable and might change rapidly just over the course of a weekend. As it is located so far north, even the Polar Summer can be quite cold and you can expect temperatures around 3-6 degrees Celcius. So what do you pack for Svalbard?
Details of my trip to Svalbard
Month: July
Season: Polar Summer
Weather: Polar Summer is one of the most popular times to visit Svalbard. The weather is relatively mild and the sun is up 24 hours a day!
Packing List
- Knit Cap – A warm hat is essential in order to keep you warm on the top of your head as well as shield your ears from heavy winds.
- Wool Socks – Warm socks will not only keep your feet warm but also dry as they wick away moisture.
- Warm Scarf – A big chunky scarf can be used as a blanket, in addition, to keeping you warm on those boat trips.
- Gloves
- Heavy Coat – Invest in a nice heavy coat to protect you from the cold.
- Down Vests – They roll up small and can be used to layer between a shirt and a jacket.
- Heavy Turtleneck – Scarf and sweater in one!
- Wool Sweater – Invest in a quality wool sweater that will keep you warm and comfortable.
- Flannel Shirt – Perfect for layering and also super comfortable. Even though you’ll probably find yourself wearing a jacket all day it’s nice to have something cute and comfortable in the car or when you’re inside having a meal.
- Long Sleeve for layering – Iceland is all about layering. In order to adjust to the temperature stepping in and out of a vehicle it is nice to be able to take on or off layers.
- Thermal Tops and Thermal Pants – These are super thin and you can even wear them under your skinny jeans. They are soft to the touch and super comfortable.
- Black Denim Pants – Super versatile! I’m such a fan of black denim pants.
- Fleece Leggings – These are life savers on those adventurous days when you’ll want to wear something comfortable and warm.
- Boots – A pair of shorter cute boots for when you want to explore Reykjavik.
- Heavy Waterproof Boots – A pair of heavy boots are perfect when you’re expecting a bit of rain or hiking the areas around Reykjavik.
